After years of asking, Nick has finally got his way. When the elders have discussed the preaching schedule and the church's needs he has often suggested that we deliver a series on the names of God. We have always been open to that, but this year when he said it, it resonated with us a bit more than usual (is that what the Bible means with the phrase 'it seemed good to us and the Holy Spirit?).
In ChristChurch we love the Bible, but we don't worship it - we worship God and we love the Bible because it is His self-disclosure to his children, He invites us to think like He does, He invites us to understand his mind. But how impossible is that? How could we ever do that? How could we ever get to know him?
One of the ways he invites us to know him more is by telling us his names, and so over the summer we will invite him to come to us, and do that.
The desire is not to get to know more about Him, but to get to know him more intimately. Helen put is so well in her chapter in the book 'Together' entitled 'Come and get to Know Me' where she gives advice to youth leaders about the Bible in ministry. Having made it clear that the Bible is not a manual she says: 'Open their eyes to the greatness of God and allow your thirst for more of Him to be infectious. But above all let it be a thirst after God and not a thirst for knowledge.
Is there anything more beautiful in all the world than to realise that God loves you as you are, and wants to spend time with you, as you are? Will you open up yourself to Him by listening as He speaks his character into your heart through the names He has chosen for Himself?
This would be a great series for regular ChristChurch people as well as their invited friends over the summer!
